Liam Tancock sets new record, bags Gold in Swimming

Fran Halsall said first gold medal of England, while Liam Tancock won their second gold medal with a Games record in the XIX Commonwealth Games 2010 in Delhi, Dr SP Mukherjee Acquatics Complex yesterday.

The second day of swimming was bag of England, two gold and two silver, while Australia bags 1-5-3.

South Africa and Scotland, said a gold medal each.

Halsall won gold in 26.24 seconds, ahead of Australian world champion Marieke Guehrer (26.27) in the women's 50 butterfly. Australia also took the bronze by Emily Seebohm (26.29).

Liam Tancock then crossed with the men's gold 50m backstroke in a Games record time of 24.62, a performance that cleared the 2006 standard of 24.84.

Hayden Stoeckel of Australia was second in 25.08, while teammate Ashley Delaney claimed third in 25.21.

"I felt pretty good, but it felt awesome. I gave my best, however, and cherished through the victory," said Tancock.

Robbie Renwick won a first gold medal for Scotland in the last end of the day, men's 200m free with a time of 1:47.88.

Australia again won the silver and bronze through Kenrick Monk (1:47.90) and Thomas Fraser-Holmes (1:48.22), respectively.

Australia's success came with a double in the women's breast Leiston Pickett final 50m to win in 30.84 ahead of Leisel Jones in 31.10, with Haywood of England seven hundredths of a second behind.

Khader Virdhawal expect India to the final with a 24.38 second effort that earned him sixth place in the semifinals and a place in the final.
